This grant allows students preparing to become teachers the opportunity to study special areas of interest, methodologies, or research over the summer break that they will take directly back into their classrooms to improve their students’ learning environments and enhance their educational experiences.

This program, with Jennifer Stowers’ world view in mind, especially, her commitment to “Seeking Social Justice for All” - in and out of the classroom - focuses on curriculum development related to the topic of activism for social justice/democracy. The Foundation welcomes the applicant’s definition of that idea (or set of ideas).

Recipients of the scholarship funds agrees to present their research (and experience of applying that research in the classroom) – in a public forum sponsored by the Foundation and a cooperating institution of higher learning – to demonstrate his/her use of primary sources, literature, and/or media.

The real end-product of this learning experience is the identified curriculum materials and resources that the researcher will share with other teachers in the classroom – again, in the spirit of Jennifer Stowers’ orientation and intended life work. Relative materials, video, and an idea forum will be posted on the Foundation’s website under a new category entitled, “Curriculum Development, Resources, and Other Bright Ideas."

The JSQ Foundation has established the Jennifer Stowers Quintal Teacher Development Endowed Scholarship Fund for Wheelock College students. The fund is administered by Wheelock College. For more information, contact the College’s Office of Financial Aid at finaid.wheelock.edu.
